ABOUT AAWSU

A Brief History of AAWSU

The All Assam Wesean Student Union (AAWSU) was established as a state wing of the Wesean Student Federation (WSF) in Assam. The formation of AAWSU arises from a shared sentiment among the Wesean communities—comprising various indigenous groups from Wesea (Northeast India, Western Myanmar, and Parts of Bangladesh) —who feel the urgent need to unite and safeguard their cultural heritage. The union embodies a collective aspiration to uphold and protect the unique identity of the Wesean people, especially in the face of external threats and socio-political challenges.

AAWSU's mission is deeply rooted in the context of Assam's unique socio-political landscape. The union is committed to working for the betterment of Assamese students, ensuring they receive quality education, fair opportunities, and a platform to voice their concerns. The influx of illegal immigrants, particularly from Bangladesh, poses a significant threat to the demographic and cultural fabric of Assam. AAWSU stands firm in its resolve to protect the rights of indigenous Assamese communities and to prioritize the welfare of native students over external influences.

The purview of the Union's responsibilities are, roughly, as follows:

  1. The Union aims to safeguard Assam's rich cultural heritage, ensuring that the traditions, languages, and customs of the Assamese people are preserved and celebrated.
  2. Efforts to protect Assam's natural resources, including its rivers, forests, and wildlife, are integral to the Union's mission.
  3. Advocating for stronger measures to prevent illegal immigration, particularly from Bangladesh, which threatens to alter Assam's demographic balance and strain its resources.
  4. Engaging in legal and policy advocacy to ensure strict enforcement of immigration laws and protection of indigenous rights.
  5. Implementing programs to improve access to quality education, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
  6. Fostering unity and cooperation among the various indigenous communities of the Wesean region, promoting a shared identity and collective strength.
  7. Assisting students in gaining visibility and representation in national and international forums, competitions, and platforms.
  8. Supporting initiatives that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation among Assamese youth, helping them to become self-reliant and contribute to the state's economy.
  9. Providing training and resources to equip students with the skills needed for the modern workforce, including digital literacy and vocational training.
